We often feel tired, debilitated, and struggle to recover between workouts. Our first reaction is to look for a quick fix : a supplement, taking an abnormal blood test, or simply blaming it all on the passage of time. However, in most cases the explanation is much more concrete: we're making daily mistakes that interfere with the body's normal recovery processes . The question isn't just what we're doing wrong, but why these mistakes have such a significant impact.
1) Insufficient hydration (before, during and after)
Water is the medium through which almost all of our body's metabolic reactions occur. During physical activity, we lose fluids and mineral salts through sweat, which must be constantly balanced through proper hydration . When this loss is not compensated for, plasma volume decreases : the blood becomes "thicker" and less efficient at transporting oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. This means that, even after finishing training, the muscles continue to receive less oxygen and fewer nutrients needed for recovery.
Furthermore, the elimination of metabolic waste products becomes slower . The result is a feeling of fatigue that persists over time, not so much due to the workout itself, but to a physiological environment that does not favor recovery.


2) Inadequate supply
Muscle glycogen is the main source of energy during endurance activities like cycling. When stores are significantly depleted and not replenished, the body enters a state of "energy deficit" that slows recovery.
Furthermore, low glycogen levels stimulate cortisol, the stress hormone, and reduce protein synthesis. This slows recovery and the immune system suffers , making us more vulnerable to inflammation and infection.
3) Work out “to compensate” for the free meal
When training load is increased unplanned, the body experiences additional stress that hasn't been anticipated or adapted to. The body functions in equilibrium: each training stimulus requires time and resources to recover.
If the load exceeds the recovery capacity, a state of cumulative fatigue occurs . Added to this is a second, often underestimated aspect: after an intense workout, the digestive system is not in optimal condition to handle particularly rich or complex meals . Blood flow, during and immediately after the activity, has been primarily directed towards the muscles.


Difficult digestion, on the other hand, requires significant involvement of the gastrointestinal system . This can drastically slow both muscle recovery and digestive processes, increasing the feeling of heaviness and general fatigue.
4) Prioritizing training and neglecting recovery
Recovery is not a passive moment, but an active phase in which the body adapts to the stimuli received . Sleep, in particular, is one of the main regulators of recovery processes. During the night, there is an increase in the secretion of growth hormone, essential for tissue repair, and a regulation of metabolic hormones and stress.
Sleeping too little or irregularly disrupts this balance, maintaining elevated cortisol levels and reducing the efficiency of anabolic processes . Over time, this translates into a reduced ability to recover, but also a deterioration in the quality of training.


These are four of the most common mistakes, often overlooked , but which profoundly impact recovery. It's not just about training well and eating healthily, but also about creating the physiological conditions for the body to truly adapt.
